Manmohan Singh to attend Copenhagen summit

New Delhi, Dec 5 – Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will attend the Dec 7-18 climate summit at Copenhagen on its last two days, a government spokesman said here Saturday.

The prime minister will attend the ‘high-level segment’ of the summit, where US President Barack Obama, Chinese President Hu Jintao and a host of European heads of government are also scheduled to attend.

The summit will start Dec 7 with negotiators from 192 countries trying to minimise the differences between them and presenting the heads of governments at the high-level segment with as few points of contention as possible.

It would then be up to the heads to iron out the remaining differences and come up with an agreed declaration, if everything goes according to plan.

The main points of contention at Copenhagen summit will be the extent to which industrialised countries will cut their greenhouse gas emissions and by when; the amount of money they will pay to developing countries to deal with climate change; and how green technologies will be transferred.
